On the 29th we went to a lecture by the wonderful Seth Riskin. He is an artist/scientist/gymnast/identical twin who has attended MIT and made a name for himself using LIGHT as a medium and creating "Light Dance!"
Seth Riskin |
He explained how light is used as a linkage between human and the higher power, and to show brilliancy and intelligence, as well as to reveal things. He told us about different architectural styles that incorporate light such as Japanese, Islamic, and Gothic architecture.
He then told us of technology that allowed artists to use art and create art such as laser drawing, strobe, video art, human flight and video.

All of this led to his own "Light Dance" creations where he incorporated his gymnastics and his own body technologies, and his own influences into his work.
In "Light Dance" Riskin wanted his BODY itself to extend into space and used technology such as holography to produce the light he wanted.
Seth Riskin informed us this image was his way of 'seeing into death' |
Out of all of this though, what was the most satisfying to me is the view of the world Mr. Riskin left us with. He caused us to question what we were seeing, feeling, and understanding. He said that one could easily describe what light is scientifically, but to truly understand light one has to understand the relationship between light and the human being.
He left us with an engaging quote by Johann Wolfgang Goethe, "My perception is itself a thinking, and my thinking a perceiving." So now I wonder what I'm really seeing and what am I really perceiving? I do not know. All I know is like Albert Einstein, "For the rest of my life I will reflect on what light is!" :)
