"Craziest Style"

Last day of class- "We're going to have a drawing competition...It was suppose to be with the Second Years, but they backed out" (HAHA!) "So instead you'll have a competition with your classmates"
We were asked to draw one of the five groups of people in the middle for ten minutes while they modeled (obviously for ten minutes).  I chose to sketch- in a sketchy manner- focusing on one person at a time for however long my heart desired.  I was surprised that it actually ended out looking somewhat like the people in front of me!  We then voted on 1-8 categories, and mine won "craziest style".  It's interesting because I wasn't going for any category at all, and was not focusing on any particular style, but I agree with my class mates on that vote :)  We then had the vote on best over all drawing via 'process of elimination' and mine was in 3rd place!  I havn't been recognized for my drawing at all throughout the semester so I was stoked that FINALLY by the VERY END of the semester I figured out my best drawing tecniques! haha! It had to happen eventually right? Better late than never.

Scale Figures

In class we started practicing how to draw scale figures.  We practiced ways of drawing them both real and abstract.  Personally, I like the abstract versions better-  I think it looks more modern and can be applied easier as well as personalized.  I chose these two scaled figures because I think the style applies to me.  They are also simple enough to be able to dress :)

Sketching

The semester has finally come to an end.  Throughout the semester we have been focusing a lot on drawing.  We've been doing observational sketches as well as random practices in class.  We've learned to capture the essence of a picture and draw it really fast, sometimes in thirty seconds, or take our time and get as much detail as necessary.  I'll have to admit that I do not particularily enjoy drawing, and I'd much rather be drafting.  However, I do think my drawing skills have improved a great deal.  Most helpful was when we completed an exercise where we adopted different class mates methods of sketching.  This allowed me to practice different ways, and I think I found one that resonated with me the most, thanks to Lindsey Grace.  The above sketch is one that I chose from my observational sketch book as my "best" or more likely my favorite drawing.  I completed it relatively fast, but for some reason I really like it.  I think it's because I used the new method!  Overall I enjoyed the semester and I'm ready to jump into the next one!

scaled sketches

This one is successful because I captured the group in only five minutes.  I tried to do a contour of the group but I think it would have helped if I just did the overall outside shape of the group and skipped most of the inside lines.

This one was done at 3/4" =1' and I liked that scale.  I think I did an okay job at the scale and capturing the person on the floor although I could have found a way to get them all faster.

Observational Sketches

For one of our assignments we were asked to draw light through liquid.  While I was sitting at my desk one day I decided to sketch this glue (haha) and I sketched it side ways to avoid the sticker on the front that blocked a lot of the light!  Although at first I thought this one was silly, I like the way it turned out, probably because of how many color values are in there.  It took around twenty minutes, and I used from HB to 6B to draw and shade it!

Above is another sketch for the light assignment.  It is suppose to be a picture of light reflecting off of water.  It was slightly wavy because there was a fountain in it.  I like this sketch because it was one of the first sketches where I used mostly the whole page.  It also looks a little abstract and creates odd shapes, which essentially is what light through water should do anyway!  It took about fifteen minutes and I used from an HB to an 8B in lead.

A later assignment we were given was to sketch our wood projects.  This was one of my first prototypes of the wood project but I thought it showed the material more clearly.  I think this sketch is successful because it shows detail rather than just the shape.  This sketch took a little over twenty minutes because I had a hard time showing the perspective!  I used a 2H and a 4H pencil!

We got a new assignment where we are drawing self portraits!  I have never done one before but I already enjoy the drawings.  Although it doesn't look too much like me, I still think it's a cool assignment because it doesn't have to look absolutely perfect- mine looks more abstract!

Above is a sketch from Susan Sadler's sketchbook that shows a different style and technique than I have thought to try.  I think she did a spectacular job at showing the texture of the stick.  Sometimes it is better to sketch something smaller with more detail rather than trying to get every thing in the drawing with less detail.

This was another one I chose because it looked so neat and orderly in her sketch book.  It was obvious that she used a straight edge to make the drawing and then shaded it in.  I hadn't thought of using tools in order to make our sketches but it could be very useful at times!
Check out more of Susan's work at http://susansadler.blogspot.com/  :)

Above is a sketch of Tricia's that I chose from her sketch book and it is a self portrait.  I chose this one because I loved the dark shading she used, plus it's just a great sketch!  Hers looks way more real than I know how to do and so hopefully I can adopt some of her techniques!  Also, all of her drawings are really stylized, like how she has the pencil on her lip in the picture, and I thought that was cool.

DRAFTING!

Selected Object- Nail Polish

In my Design Visualization class we have been working on pictorials!  I had to select an object and orthographically draw it.  Once I had completed that we were asked to draw three pictorials of it; Isometric, Elevation Oblique, and Plan Oblique.    Above is my final project.
I thought this was one of the most challenging projects thus far because of the detail!  I also have a really hard time with circles.  I know how to use the four point system and triangle method, and they look correct on trace paper, however when I try to trace the circle on Vellum it doesn't look quite as good!  I have to work on circles!

Object A and B- Isometric

We continued working on our pictorial views by drawing two objects given to us in orthographic views on paper in full scale.  Object A was definitely the more challenging of the two because of all the 30 or 45 degree angles I had to draft!  With the isometric view I think the only trouble I had was making the angles consistantly 30 degrees as well as making the circles look like one perfect line again!

Object A and B- Plan Oblique

I enjoyed drafting the plan oblique.  This is the newest view we've learned.  I like the way it turned out better than the Isometric.

Object A and B- Elevation Oblique

The Elevation Oblique always looks a little funny because we havn't learned to shorten the lines yet!  I think it turned out  nicely except I forgot to draw the back center line for Object B!
Overall I think I'm improving a lot since the beginning of the year!  I'm pretty happy with my line weight, and I think my format is usually pretty good-although it could improve in some (the drawings are always bigger than you think they will be!) and I think I understand how to do all three pictorials (finally)!  However, I still want my hand writing to improve and my circles definitely need some improving!  I also just need to check over my work to make sure I don't forget any lines.

Leaf Sketch

In Design Visualization we practice observational sketches.  This is a sketch I chose as one of my favorites because I like the shading!  This sketch was completed on September 15th and took around 20 minutes.  I found the leaf at the BMX skate park and drew it while my boyfriend was riding.  I think my sketches are definitely improving, especially after the value study!

Inspiration

I think the best way to find inspiration is by talking to other people.  Every person looks and thinks about situations in different ways, so what someone else says could spark something great in your mind!
